Publisher's blue hard cover binding with gilt embossed titles on front panel and spine.

xxiii + 240pp. Illustrations in profusion.

Contents clean. Binding solid. The rare pictorial dust jacket is still present with some mild age-associated edge wear. There is a split in the dust jacket spine along the bottom end of the hinge of the front panel but with no loss of paper.

The author, Walter Rose (1884-1964), was a famous South African herpetologist. He discovered and photographed the first known populations of the Capensibufo rosei or Rose's mountain toadlet as well as the Table Mountain ghost frog, both endemic to Table Mountain. The ghost frog gets its name from the area where it was first recorded, namely Skeleton Gorge, which is a shadowy, steep and ghostly quiet ravine on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. It is one of South Africa's rarest frog species because of its extremely limited range and in Rose's book he provides some interesting photographs of the ghost frog as a tadpole, an adult, its stomach and even an x-ray (see pages 52-56).
