One page circa 80 word autograph letter by H.F. Verwoerd, the "architect of Apartheid" and the third Nationalist Prime Minister (after D.F. Malan and J.G. Strydom). The letter is addressed to the well known autograph collector R.E.D. (Ray) Rawlins, the author of several books on autographs and autograph collecting. From the handwritten address, it appears that he was a District Commissioner in Swaziland at the time. Verwoerd comments on the apparent success of Rawlins' hobby and is flattered by his request "...it makes one feel like Hollywood!", thus acceding to his request for a "few words". He talks about his preoccupation with "votes and Bills". Generally a charming note. Autograph letters by Verwoerd are uncommon. In fine condition on a folded official Union of South Africa letterhead and dated Pretoria, 1956.
