Complete set of twelve chromolithographic relief printed cards published by Birn Bros. (BB).

Each: 120 x 155 mm

The subjects are:

  1. Captain Charles Fitzclarence on 14th Oct, 1899 rescued armoured train from Mafeking with untrained me against an enemy greatly superior in number through his coolness.
  2. Sergeant Major William Robertson at the Battle of Elandslaagte 21 October 1899. Led each successive rush an captured enemy’s position being dangerously wounded in two places.
  3. Captain C.E. Mullins on October 21. 1899 at Elandslaagte for saving the life of a trooper.
  4. Second Lieutenant John Norwood, outside Ladysmith 30 October 1899. After hasty retreat galloped back 300 yards through heavy fire picking up a fallen trooper and carried on his back out of range while leading the horse.
  5. Corporal J. Schaul on Dec.11. 1899 at the Battle of Maggersfontein for several specific acts of bravery.
  6. Lieutentant the Hon. F.H.S. Roberts (deceased), Colenso 15 Dec 1899 for conspicuous bravery, wounded in three places.
  7. Captain H.L. Read at Colenso, 15th Dec. 1899 for attempting rescue of guns with 3 teams but was obliged to retire after a loss of half his men and horses.
  8. Major Hornby, Sergeant Parker, Gunner Lodge, Driver Glasock, Action at Kornspruit 31 March 1900. This battery was treated as one of collective distinction, elected by non commissioned officers, eletcted by gunners and drivers.
  9. Lieutenant H.Z.C. Cockburn. For great bravery on Kormati River, 7 November 1900.
  10. Farrier Major W.P. Hardham, for conspicuous bravery near Naanpoort, 28 January 1901.
  11. Liententant L.C. Maugar (Mounted Rifle, Victorian), For conspicuous bravery at Geel Hout Boom, 23. November 1900.
  12. Surgeon Captain A. Marlin-Leake, During the action at Vlakfontein 8. February 1902 attended several wounded under heavy fire from 40 Boers at 100 yards until wounded 3 times.

 Birn Brothers, Ltd (1905–1964) published under the name BB London and most of their printing of cards and other ephemera was done in Saxony and Bavaria.

All have been removed from a mount with traces of glue and paper on the reverse.

Very good copies with all the printed captions intact.
