Also of Africana interest with descriptions of the visit to South Africa, a map of the Cape, illustrations of the peoples and animals, etc.

Housed in a custom made slip case by master craftsman Peter Carstens with black cloth, hand marbled paper, a pictorial in-set on the side and leather trim.

Vellum binding with a remnant of the title label. 2 free front end papers, 370 pages and 30 illustrations, including maps.

Copies vary and this copy appears to have more text than usual: 10 prelims as follows: Title page, followed by author's dedication. The text pages start at page one, which has a vignette, to page 264 where the pagination changes at "Livre V" and "Livre VI" (the fifth and sixth chapters) down to 133 to end at 227, followed by 10 index pages and 2 pages of the catalogue, giving a total of 370 pages, excluding the plates.

CONDITION DETAILS: Images are provided of the pen and pencil writing on the front paste down and the ownership stamp on the first free front end paper. One of the fold out plates has the outer edge torn off - see image - where the right hand side of the illustration has a jagged edge. Two of the fold out plates have been trimmed down, not affecting the image. This copy does not have a list of illustrations. There are two rear free end papers (blanks) and the last one has a piece torn off.
