Hackett (R.G.) South African War Books An Illustrated Bibliography page 55: A volume pertaining to the supply and management of horses during the war. The author is critical of the Army Remount Department suggesting a great deal of money was wasted on the purchase of unsuitable animals. The merits of various breed are considered relative to conditions prevailing in South Africa. In the writer's opinion Arab and Australian ponies were the most suitable. An interesting account is given at the Stellenbosch remount depot, the principal centre for remount distribution during the war. Galvayne concludes with suggestions for reorganization of the department and attendant services.
