Number 55 of the Edition De Luxe, limited to two hundred and fifty copies, signed by the author-artist. 4to; original pale buckram over bevelled boards, with gilt lettering to spine and upper cover, and blue and red blocking; top edge gilt; ribbon marker; pp. xiii + (i) + 274; several plates, many of which in colour, with captioned tissue-guards. Spine a little tanned; cloth lightly rubbed, and extremities very slightly worn; endpapers rather foxed, and sporadic, moderate foxing elsewhere (the plates themselves practically unaffected). A very nice copy of this rare variant issue. (Hackett, p. 22,189; Mendelssohn II, p. 262) "Campaign record compiled by an officer of the Mounted Infantry attached to Gen. French's 1st Cavalry Brigade. The content is drawn from a sketch book kept up from day to day during the war. Chapters relate to the siege and relief of Kimberley, events at Sanna's Post, the crossing of the Vaal, etc. An account of life on commando is based on data supplied by a Transvaal Boer. The volume contains 66 full page illustrations and numerous other drawings." - Hackett: South African War Books, p. 22. Mendelssohn appositely remarks that "The sketches are full of interest from a literary and artistic standpoint, and the coloured illustrations possess considerable beauty and merit."
