The Story of 'The Friend' Newspaper edited by the Correspondents with Lord Roberts`s Forces, March-April, 1900. Julian Ralph was one of the Editors of 'The Friend' newspaper in Bloemfontein during the war and author of 'Towards Pretoria', 'At Pretoria', etc. With contributions by Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling Hardcover, pp. xv + 422, original red cloth with gilt titles on spine, black & white illustrations. Spine and front hinges cracked but intact, boards worn, previous owner's name on half title page, small rubber stamp on first pages, a bit of loss to text on inside front, markings in ink on verso of title page, foxing throughout. Published by Juta in Cape Town during the war, one of the few publishing houses in South Africa that produced a title on the war at the time.
