The South African Special Forces Brigade, popularly known as "Recces" was the only Special Forces unit of the old South African National Defence Force. It played a significant role in the country's 30 year long border war in Namibia and Angola. It was composed of 4 Special forces regiment which concentrated on naval activities, and 5 Special Forces Regiment, which on overland activities, especially long-range infiltration. The Brigade was directly under the command of the Joint Operations Division of the SANDF, and unlike other similar forces worldwide, was not a part of the South African Army. The duties of the Brigade included reconnaissance, sabotage, underwater demolition and counter-terrorism.
