A delightful book for young readers on African wildlife by one of the greatest explorers. Though intended for the young it is informative and intelligently written and illustrated. The author spent his youth in Western Africa where he learned the indigenous languages and after moving to America, gained support to fund an expedition into Gabon where his father had earlier been a tradesman. During his first expeditions he made important discoveries of new and exotic wildlife, the most famous being the African gorilla which was presented in illustrated format for the first time in the author's EXPLORATIONS AND ADVENTURES IN EQUATORIAL AFRICA which had been issued in 1861.
