Schillings was one of the first sportsmen of repute "to stand up before a snobbish public and proclaim that the best sport for a man of cultivated mind is the snapshotting with the camera, rather than the pumping of lead into elephants, rhinoceroses, antelopes, zebras, and many other harmless, beautiful, or rare beasts and birds" (from the introduction). The photographs are altogether an amazing collection, portraying a wide variety of creatures in their natural habitats, including even nighttime predators in mid-pounce. With Schillings highly readable prose, this is altogether an informative and thoughtful work.
