By 'third edition' the author means that with each succeeding edition he extended the account of the campaign as the war progressed. In the preface to the third edition he states: This present edition of this work includes the story of the First Division up to date, and also comprises the Official Accounts of the Battle of Modder River and Magersfontein, which were obtained by the compiler until a short time since.
Herbert Melville Guest (29 January 1853 – 29 June 1938) was an author, newspaper owner and politician of the Transvaal. He acquired the Klerksdorp Mining Record in 1889. He wrote several books on the Second Boer War in the area of Klerksdorp. In 1903 he became one of the first city council members and was mayor from 1910 to 1911 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Melville_Guest
In 1939 Herman Guest, the son of Herbert Guest, bound a few of his father's Boer War publications and offered them for sale. He wrote that the three war monographs by his father (H.M. Guest) "were written and produced when Klerksdorp was practically in a state of siege. The inhabitants were unable to proceed a mile in any direction from the market square, and one railway line, although closely guarded, was frequently disturbed by the Boers."
