The author was an officer under Rimington, who recruited a body of men (mainly from Natal) who were known as 'Scouts' or 'Guides', the intention being that they should operate as an Intelligence body rather than as a fighting unit. He was active at Belmont, Magersfontein and later served under General J. French in the Eastern Transvaal and later in the North-Eastern Free State, earning for himself a reputation for very rapid movement.. 219 pp plus 32 pp ads. Good condition in original covers, except for slight damage to top of spine, but egdes of textblock and ads at rear foxed.
