Publisher's green cloth binding with titles in gilt on spine.

x + 361pp + 40pp (catalogue). With a fold-out map and 14 plates.

Book is clean internally with a former owner's bookplate on the front paste down. Although the hinges are cracked the binding is still good and shows minimal wear. Fold-out map has a short tear along one fold but with no loss of paper.

The author's highly critical narrative of the Emin Pasha relief expedition. Troup was the commander of the rear column but was deserted by Stanley in the Ituri forest where they languished for thirteen months without any supplies or news of the advance guard. This book not only put a big question mark on Stanley's leadership ability but also cast a shadow over his reputation when he was at the height of his fame.
