First Edition: 277 pages, frontispiece of Rev E.P. Lowry, 7 plates, uncut edges, pictorial red cloth, a fine copy. 

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, page 930, 'In this volume the narrative "begins with our triumphal occupation of Bloemfontein, and is continued till after the time of the breaking up of the Guards' Brigade." The publication sets forth "the many-sided life of our soldiers on active service, their privations and perils, and in some cases their unfeigned piety."’ 

Hackett (R.G.) South African War Books: an illustrated bibliography, page 62, 'A record compiled by the senior Wesleyan Chaplain attached to the Guards' Brigade. Most of the narrative concerns the march through the Orange Free State and later operations in the Transvaal. A chapter on clergy in general, is included. Some of the material was first published in The Methodist Times, The Methodist Recorder and other papers.’
