Register

215 mm high by 120 mm in diameter, with a brass strip below the lip secured with five screws (one is missing). Carved and highlighted in black around the barrel – D.G. Mostert. P.O.W. Bermuda 1902.

Possibly varnished later to hide cracks - it is likely that the metal strip was also added later.

Bermuda 1902

‘At the end of the war there were 24,000 prisoners of war in the overseas camps and 6000 in camps in South Africa.
The greatest number of POW’s were shipped to Bermuda, where a number of camps were established on different islands, namely Burt’s Island, Darrell’s Island, Hawkin’s Island, Hinson’s Island (also called Godet Iland), Long Island, Morgan’s Island, Port Island, Smith’s Island and Tucker’s Island.’ Oosthuizen (Pieter) Boer War Memorabilia, The Collector’s Guide, (1987), page 83.
