The title of the book is a misnomer, for after constant travelling in South Africa for nearly five years, the Vescelius (or Vesalius) girls (as they were popularly called) did not get nearer to Zululand than Durban. The three sisters took part in a series of entertainments in Kimberley and other parts of Africa, being generally assisted by local amateurs, and their experiences are brightly and intelligently described. There is a very good account of Kimberley 1880-1 and the sketches illustrating this volume are excellent.
