Publisher's illustrated cloth binding with Zulu warrior on front panel. Bevelled edges.
viii + 374pp. + 2pp. adverts at rear. Illustrated.
Possible author's presentation inscription on front endpaper, dated 1879.
'A great part of the matter contained in this work is taken from "The Ruined Cities of Zulu Land," which was "reviewed, altered, and compressed" to meet the purposes of this edition.' - Mendelssohn Vol.II, page 581
The book referred to in the above Mendelssohn entry was written by Walmsley ten years earlier (1869). I assume the "purpose" of this new edition was to rework the original material with regard to the dramatic events which took place in South Africa in 1879, as a new commercial opportunity for such material presented itself with the outbreak of the Anglo-Zulu War.
