"From an inaugural membership of 36 in 1893 the Club has grown to a membership of 1 626 by 1979. That this figure was not substantially bigger was a result of the outbreak of hostilities to an organised plan in 1972, developing into a form of warfare which upset much of the economy and led to emigration on a scale formerly unknown. When the War ended officially in 1980 Rhodesia had lost many of its citizens who had been skilled and experienced in creating a thriving country out of a savage wilderness.
The emphasis on personalities is deliberate: men are better than mortar, and bricks are less interesting than brief biographies."
A very elusive socio-historical work.
