8vo; original blue buckram, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pp. xii + 332. Joints very slightly rubbed; earlier owner's hand-stamp to bottom edge; edges and endpapers somewhat foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere; copious penned notes on language, in a neat hand, to endpapers; sporadic marginalia and underlining. Good condition.
Exceedingly uncommon. (Murphy & Goff 894; Doke Collection, p. 75) The related Runyoro (Lunyoro) and Runyankore (Lunyankole) languages have their heartland in Uganda. "The compiler has attempted an exceedingly difficult task, that of combining in one Dictionary the vocabularies of two allied languages, Lunyoro and Lunyankole. ... It seems to me that she has shown great ingenuity in overcoming these formidable difficulties, and that in the result the reader who pays careful attention to the instructions given at the beginning of the Dictionary should be able in every case to discover to which language any particular word belongs." - From the Preface
