London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1879
8vo, x + 267pp. Hardcover binding, gilt lettering and tooling to spine, inlaid gilt and black designs to front board. Recased copy with new endpapers. All edges gilt. With steelpoint frontispiece.
Mendelssohn (Sidney), South African Bibliography, volume 1, page 55: ‘This work describes a visit to the Transvaal, &c, in 1877-8. The author does not appear to have been successful as a digger or a speculator, but his experiences at Spitz Kop and Pilgrim's Rest fairly describe the life of the alluvial diggers at that period. Mr. Atcherley evidently believed the Boers were unjustly treated, and his non-success in negotiating with the British authorities in the Transvaal seems to have embittered his views.’
Condition: Good-very good. Recased copy with new endpapers, professionally done. Some rubbing and edgewear to boards, some chipping to top and tail of spine. Small red mark to bottom of p. viii. Minor splitting to gutters between some of the pages. Slight foxing throughout. Text overall clean. Still well bound.
