1st edition, 335pp, with illustrations. Publisher's original dark green cloth covered boards. Some minor wear to the extremities and some rubbing to the covers. The binding is tight. Internally, the pages are generally clean with minor occasional foxing and some very light age toning. The inside of the back cover shows minor cracking of the guttering. A very good copy.
The book is written as a series of letters, describing Lady Barker's (Mary Anne Barker) trip to South Africa and daily experiences while living in Natal. Her letters provide a detailed firsthand perspective on Victorian domestic challenges, local South African weather, interactions with servants, colonial social circles, and Zulu customs.
