Geoffrey Clayton served as the influential Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg (1934–1948) and subsequently the Archbishop of Cape Town (1948–1957). During this era, Canon J.H. Hodson was a prominent clergyman under Clayton's jurisdiction, serving as a Canon of Cape Town and later as the Rector of Christ Church in Constantia, Cape Province.
Due to his firsthand experience serving under Clayton's demanding leadership during the rise of the apartheid regime, Canon Hodson became a key historical source regarding Clayton's life. He provided insights, accounts, or correspondence utilized by author Alan Paton for his definitive 1973 biography, Apartheid and the Archbishop: The Life and Times of Geoffrey Clayton.
