(A collection from published and unpublished documents translated and annotated by Major R. Raven-Hart)
First Edition: 216 pages, frontispiece, 4 maps, 14 plates, grey cloth, a good copy in lightly worn dust jacket.
Editor's note: 'Before Jan van Riebeeck set foot on land in 1652, many other ships had called at the Cape in search of fresh water and provisions. Some of these visitors to the Cape, for instance Bartholomeu Dias in 1488, Vasco da Gama in 1497 and 1499, Antonio de Saldahna in 1503, and Francisco d'Almeida in 1510 have become well known because the stories of their travels have been widely published. There are many more records of travels containing stories of ships and visitors who called here which have never been translated into English and relatively unknown to the average reader. Besides these, many other visitors called at the Cape whose visits are only found in log-books and diaries which have never been published at all and can be studied only in the archives.'
