Major Raven-Hart was born in Ireland. During WWII he served on Mountbatten's staff. He lived in Sri Lanka and South Africa after the war. The 153 travellers' accounts that appear in this work date from 1488 (Dias) to 1649 (Tavernier) and Raven-Hart only translated or included accounts directly related to the Cape. He provides insight into the physical environment and the people living in and around the Cape at this time. These accounts are presented without comment or interpretation.
