From the Foreword: “Believing that many who have never visited the Dark Continent may find some interest in the life of those European exiles who have tasted the bitter and sweet of tropical Africa… I have set down my experiences as an official’s wife in a small community on the slopes of an extinct volcano some three degrees south of the Equator and two hundred and fifty miles inland from the East African coast.

“If the happenings in this tiny settlement of nine to fifteen white men and women lack the colour and tradition of older outposts of the Empire, I hope the reader might find some compensating interest in the realm of black Africanism which contributed to the zest of our life with its quaint customs and practices.

“I have endeavoured to set forth the difficulties and delights of creating something from nothing in a country as barer of luxuries as Mother Hubbard’s cupboard…”.
