Letcher was born at Redruth, Cornwall on 27th May 1884, and graduated from the Redruth School of Mines. This drew him to the gold-mines of the Witwatersrand. He developed a passion for world travel and big-game hunting in Africa, and authored many books.

In British East Africa, he bagged buffalo along the Guaso Nyiro River as well as gerenuk, giraffe oryx, gazelle and other game, An often overlooked work with considerable big game hunting.
