Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city and capital of Matebeleland, is situated on the edge of the plateau. It has been the focal point of the area since the 1840s. In 1893 it was the first major settlement created by the British South Africa Company. Its strategic location meant there have been a number of battles fought in and around Bulawayo.
