Published by Methuen 1898 1st edition. 27+320+40 pages, 15 illustrations, folding coloured maps. Very good + green cloth covers gilt with gilt design to the front board. Gilt titles to spine. Internally very good with a frontis of the author.

Vandeleur, was an officer in the Scots Guards, and who participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895, the Niger Expedition in 1897, and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was killed in 1901 when a fusillade of gunfire was fired on his train by the Boers.
