xv, 198 pages: illustrations, portraits. (Rhodesiana reprint library. Silver series; volume 14). Cloth, dust wrapper.
This book includes two notable biographies: Baker's CECIL RHODES, THE MAN AND HIS DREAM (1934) and THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF...RHODES, with additional chapters by W.T. Stead (1902). Baker provides rare insight into Rhodes and his views. Baker (1862-1946) grew up in rural Kent and trained at the Royal Academy. He appreciated traditional materials and workmanship; Rhodes had rustic tastes and did not like "gimmicks" or materials imported from Europe. They met on board ship en route to South Africa in 1892. As their visions coincided, Rhodes commissioned Baker to alter Groote Schuur, thus starting Baker's prestigious career.
Stead (1849-1912) was a journalist who knew Rhodes well and was one of his estate's executors. He died aboard THE TITANIC. There is an appraisal of Rhodes by Oliver Ransford in the introduction to this work.
