1931. Oxford University Press - for the International Institute of African Languages  & Cultures.  8vo. 198pp. Translated by F.H. Dutton and with an introduction by Sir Henry Newbolt. The first edition in English of this Classic early novelised and mythical version of the life of Zulu Emperor, Chaka/Shaka, written in 1910, but only first published (in Sesotho) in 1925 and thus arguably the earliest black Southern African novel to have established a lasting place in modern South African and indeed world literature. 'Moreover, especially since the publication of Daniel P. Kunene's later English translation of Chaka, the novel has become increasingly appreciated for its literary value. In a review for English in Africa, Neil Lazarus described Chaka as an "extraordinary and enigmatic work of literature ... demanding the close attention of all scholars of African literature." In February 2002, Chaka was named one of the twelve best works of African literature of the 20th century by a panel organised by Ali Mazrui as part of the Zimbabwe International Book Fair.' (Wikipedia). It has been frequently republished and is still in print and being taught today.

A just about fine copy in the original blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. Fore and lower edges uncut. There is a light pencilled ownership inscription on the front free endpaper (which could be easlly erased) but otherwise the pages are crisp and clean and the book has an unread feel. The very scarce dustwrapper is only fair with fairly large pieces missing at the extremes of the spine and the adjacent rear panel, but the front panel is essentially complete - see the images.
