This copy contains a typed letter from the author which is signed. Major-General van der Spuy gives details about the whereabouts of all his medals and also mentions that he encloses a stick-on autograph with this letter. The stick-on autograph was thereafter placed on the title page as can now be seen.
'Chasing the Wind, the autobiography of Major-General Kenneth van der Spuy, is essentially the story of an adventurous life spent in pursuit of an ideal. As a youth of 19 he was one of the first batch of nine pilots to be trained for the future South African Air Force. At the outbreak of the First World War he joined the Royal Flying Corps and had a remarkable carreer in operational flying, culminating in - unfortunately for himself but to the fascination of the reader - one-and-a-half years as a "criminal" prisoner of war of the Bolsheviks in the Kremlin. On his release from captivity he returned to South Africa and over the years played a major role in the development of the South African Air Force and Union Defence Force. Full of fascinating asides on the leading political and military personalities of his time, Major-General Van der Spuy's story is not only a vital piece of Africana but a most absorbing record of adventure and achievement' - editor's note
