3. Shapiro, Hillel A. (Editor) - EXPERIENCE WITH HUMAN HEART TRANSPLANTATION. The Proceedings on The Cape Toown Heart Transplantation Symposium 13-16 July, 1968. Foreword by Professor Christiaan Barnard. 1969. Butterworths, Durban. 8vo. 290pp Extensive illustrations. A very good plus clean unmarked copy in dustwrapper.
Professor Chris Barnard performed the world's first Human Heart Transplantation at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on the 3rd December, 1967. The recipient, Mr Louis Washkansky died 18 days post-operatively due to rejection. Barnard performed his second heart transplant a month later on Dr Philip Blaiberg on the 2nd January, 1968, Blaiberg was the first human heart recipient to be discharged from hospital and in fact lived for 19 months postoperatively. The copy of Blaiberg's own story on offer here was published and signed several months before his death. It is to the best of my knowledge, the first book to be written by a Heart Transplant survivor. The book; 'Experience with Human Heart Transplantation' on offer here, was published in 1969 and reports on the Symposium on Heart Transplantation held in Cape Town in July 1968 and was, I believe, the first Conference ever held exclusively on this topic. It was attended by most of the International Doctors active at this early stage of Heart Transplantation. The book would appear to be uncommon.
