A beautiful set of six Volumes with chromolithographic title pages plus 234 chromolithographic plates of English castles, mansions and estates, 6 vignette coloured half-titles with tissue guard, bound in the original publisher's uniform decorative cloth, all edges gilt. Extremities rubbed, some joints weak, scattered foxing throughout, overall a good and attractive set.
The plates were drawn by Alexander Francis Lydon and printed from coloured woodblocks by the Baxter process by Benjamin Fawcett of Driffield, Yorkshire. Plates are noted for their precise printing and rich colouring (each plate printed in an average of eight colours).
