An extremelly rare first edition, first impression copy of the scarce work "Historical overview of the 'Loffelycke Compagnie' (or the Dutch East India Company, also known as VOC)". With 21 pasted-in glossy paper b&w illustrations and 21 wood-engraved illustrations (including maps and panoramic views of VOC settlements, forts and ports, famous VOC ships with naval scenes, scenes of battles, portraits of all Governor-Generals, facsimiles of charters, VOC emblems, main administrative buildings, etc.). This first edition, first impression copy has a hardcover binding (instead of later softcover impressions).

Kalff"; Original publisher's beige cartonage hardcover with cloth spine; Text in Dutch; Collation complete - Title page, 121 pages, with numerous pasted-in illustrations and wood-engraved illustrations; Binding is strong, tight and firm, with usual shelf wear. Minor bumping to the extremities and spine, some age tanning to the boards and spine. Otherwise the binding is whole and secure, hinges and joints are whole and strong. Ex-owner's inscriptions to the top right corners of the front free endpaper and title page. Text block/pages in very good condition, very clear and without markings, but with slight yellowing and occasional light foxing mostly to the white margins (except 4-5 pages with widespread light foxing), title page age tanned, some pages with dark imprint from pasted-in illustrations on adjacent pages. A sound copy.
