A first edition of the very first Bible book translated into the Afrikaans language.
The translators chose Genesis, the first book of the Bible, to be translated and published in its entirety. Despite their best intentions, this pioneering work proved to be unpopular as public opinion still regarded Afrikaans as inferior to Dutch, and puritan Calvinistic tastes still leaned very much towards the obsolete Old Dutch of the Staten Bijbel. Nevertheless, things were set in motion that could not be undone, and in 1933, after a long struggle, the first complete Bibles in Afrikaans were published - a high point in the history of the Afrikaans language!
Only 3000 copies of this book were published in the Paarl in 1893 by the legendary firm of D.F. du Toit & Co., - the official publishing house of the First Afrikaans Language Movement, and they are extremely scarce.
