Publisher's original leather binding with gilt title on spine.
A good copy of the first Bible published in the Afrikaans language. It was printed in England and the first 10,000 copies arrived in Cape Town in May, 1933.
The original leather binding has some moderate age-associated wear. Contents clean with contemporary gift inscription on front blank endpaper. The front and rear black endpapers are chipped along the edges.
The initial attempts to translate the Bible into Afrikaans were made with the publication of Genesis in 1893, but it would take another forty years before the first complete Afrikaans Bibles were published and distributed - a high point in the Afrikaans language.
