The author Hester van Heerden (1873-1947) was a pioneer Afrikaans journalist and children's author. She wrote popular children's stories for the Afrikaans magazine Die Brandwag under the pen name "Tannie" (meaning Auntie). She was the first female Afrikaans journalist and her Klein Duimpie books are regarded as some of the earliest examples of Afrikaans children's literature.
