1.) TOAST LIST & DINNER MENU FOR A BANQUET GIVEN IN HONOUR OF GENERAL JAN SMUTS BY THE CITY OF JOHANNESBURG IN 1940
One of the few surviving original dinner menus for a "Banquet given by the Mayor (Councillor T. A. M. Huddle, J.P.) in honour of the Prime Minister General the Right Honourable J. C. Smuts, P.C., C.H., K.C., D.T.D., M.P.
The Banquet was held in Johannesburg's City Hall on Friday, 24th May, 1940, at 7.30 p.m.
The menu still contains the loosely inserted facsimile of the Illuminated Address Presented To The Prime Minister.
At the time Smuts was one of the most famous people in the world. As Prime Minister of South Africa he declared war on Germany on 6th September, 1939, making South Africa one of the first countries to do so. In 1941 he was appointed field marshal and in 1945 he signed the UN Charter.

8pp. stapled card. Contains the Roll of Honour of the 120 OLD GREYS who remained behind.
