Dr. Petrus Johannes van der Merwe (1912–1979) was a prominent South African historian and author who wrote on the history of the Cape Trekboers (migrant farmers). His notable works include:
Die Kafferoorlog [sic] van 1793 (The Kaffir [sic] War of 1793)
Die Trekboer in die Geskiedenis van die Kaapkolonie, 1657-1843 (The Migrant Farmer in the History of the Cape Colony)
Pioniers van die Dorsland (Pioneers of the Thirstland)
This pamphlet, Early Cape Land Tenure by archivist and author Colin Graham Botha, would have been a valuable source for Van der Merwe's research.
