"This work is an attempt to outline the main features of the development of the economy of the Dutch East Indies from its earliest beginnings to the present day, primarily by drawing on the numerous, mostly Dutch, sources available. The accompanying illustrations are not intended to characterize the land and its people, but merely to vividly highlight the central ideas of this work."
