First Edition: xii + 402 + 24 pages of publisher’s catalogue, large folding Map of the Transvaal and the Surrounding Territories by F.J. Jeppe, Pretoria (1879) as frontispiece, the original green pictorial cloth gilt over bevelled boards is bright but the top corners are bumped, a very good copy.
Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 2, page 267, ‘A rather interesting account of a tour throughout South Africa from March to October 1878. The author, who was in search of health, started from Pietermaritzburg, and enjoyed some good shooting en route; amongst other places visited were Spitzkop and Lydenburg, and there is an excellent description of the goldfields at this period, together with notes on the Boers and the natives. Some particulars are afforded respecting the campaign with Sekhukhune, and there is a reproduction of a Royal Proclamation calling for volunteers, which shows the extraordinary methods adopted by the Government in order to induce the inhabitants to enlist.’
