One of 150 copies so bound out of a total printing of 1000. Not numbered. James Stewart was a Civil Engineer (CE) and is not to be confused with Dr. James Stewart of Lovedale. He did however arrive in Malawi at the suggestion of the latter, the two men being cousins. The Blantyre Mission that he built was the precursor of the leading city of Malawi today. This text is the content of his diary and explores the following themes: The building of Blantyre Station; The Question of Civil Jurisdiction; Journeys of exploration. His significance in the history of Malawi is covered in the Introduction.

Half green calf over marbled paper. 93pp illustrated 13 plates, three folding maps at rear. Hand made solander box, green cloth and matching marbled paper. No dustwrapper as issued. The List of Illustrations lists as end-papers two pages from the original of the diary; these are not featured in this leather-bound edition, the end-papers being matching marbled paper.

No inscriptions, four square corners. A Very Fine copy in matching solander box with the original protective tissue as provided for book inside. An unmarked and unread copy.
