The foundational reference work for anyone researching Afrikaner and Cape colonial family history.
George McCall Theal's Preface to volume 2:
'Since the first volume of the Genealogical Register of the Old Cape Families was published, several persons have sent me lists of their blood relatives, and I have also received a large and important notebook of the late Mr. C. C. de Villiers, the colonial archivist.
'This notebook contains notes extracted from letters written by burghers to the government between 1690 and 1785. These notes were made by Mr. De Villiers during the three months before his death, and they were left by him in the archives office when he went home for the last time, expecting to return the following morning to continue his work.
'From the increased information thus received by me, this second volume of the Genealogical Register is an improvement in comparison with the first. With the third volume, which is now in hand, the work will be completed.'
