Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 2, page 502: ‘Contemporary History, or the present state of Africa, giving in particular an account of Barbary, Senegal, Guinea, the Cape of Good Hope, the Canaries, the Azores, St. Helena, &c. From the reports of Shaw, Adanson, De la Caille, and other modem travellers. Embellished with new plates.
‘This compilation, according to Theal ("History of South Africa, 1691- 1795"), "is one of a collection of works upon contemporary history published by Isaak Tirion of Amsterdam." One hundred and eighteen pages are devoted to the Cape Colony, but " the historical references are less correct than one could wish to see them, and in all parts inaccuracies may be found,"which follow the errors of the authors from which the information was drawn. Mr. Theal states that the general map of South Africa "is very erroneous."’
