'In Opposition is a book of photographs of Americans. They are Americans caught in action in the streets, Americans using signs, flags, buttons, masks, and most of all, their own bodies, to capture public attention and express a point of view.
The photographs present a compassionate, honest, and striking visual record of protest in the 1960's. Black demonstrators for equal rights are juxtaposed with white supporters - and white opponents; peace marchers confront advocates of war; while the even smaller minorities are shown pressing their own beliefs. Together these photographs demonstrate the use in present day dissent of a new imagery and the tendency, even the necessity, to escalate protest to the point of violence.' - editor's note
