Cowen, a supporter of Uitlander causes, was an inveterate pamphleteer, publisher and photographer. Davies was a photographer who came to the Reef from Port Elizabeth. It is extraordinary that just three years after gold was first discovered there, Johannesburg could boast the number of buildings it did and, as Cowen is proudly able to show in this slim volume, substantial buildings of architectural merit. It is impressive that by 1889 Johannesburg had the facilities to produce such a sophisticated publication.
