THIS work on the origins of various Johannesburg place-names up to the end of 1968, as found in streets, suburbs, parks and other public places, has been compiled by the Johannesburg City Librarian from information supplied by many people with Johannesburg connections from all parts of the world, and from books, old maps and plans, company reports, government publications, archival material, and all kinds of relevant sources. In this alphabetic list are many items of hitherto unknown information about the establishment of specific townships and some good stories connected with the naming of these places in the city. The sources used are recorded so that it is possible to judge the authenticity and reliability of most of them.
This is an important addition to publications on place-names and the first comprehensive work on this subject in relation to Johannesburg,
An appendix is included which lists a selection of the names under such subject headings as animals, Johannesburg worthies, rivers, and places.
