For two hundred years few people outside Lady Anne Barnard's family realised that she was a fine artist as well as the famous writer of letters from the Cape, to Lord Macartney and others.
Family member, Nicolas Barker has produced this magnificently illustrated book. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of the family history, he has provided an account of Lady Anne's sojourn at the Cape, and also the subject of her drawings. The book provides a vivid and enthralling picture of life at the Cape two centuries ago.
Nicolas Barker was head of Conservation at the British Library and editor of The Book Collector.
