First edition: vi,119 pages, frontispiece portrait, map, a photograph of Salt's grave in Elandslaagte cemetery which was rededicated in March 1966, original vellum spine and grey paper covered boards, which are slightly worn, titled gilt with gilt decoration on upper cover and spine, top edge gilt others uncut, foxing on the plates and page edges, marbled end papers, a very good copy.

Hackett (R.G.) South African War Books page 27: Extracts from the letters and diary of Lieut. Salt of the 1st Batt. Royal Welch Fusiliers chiefly relating events in Natal from Oct. 1899 to April 1900. Salt witnessed the battle of Colenso and reports comprehensively of other engagements in operations about the Tugela. Most of the correspondence pertains to military matters with some criticism expressed in respect of General Buller. Soon after the relief of Ladysmith the writer was taken ill with enteric fever, He died at the base hospital near Modder Spruit on April 3rd, 1900. The last two letters are addressed to his father from an officer of the regiment'.
