Life in Stone. Zimbabwean sculpture, Birth of a contemporary art form.
Today Zimbabwean sculptors rank amongst the best in the world. Eighty years after the discovery of traditional African art by the European avant-garde, they have given a new direction to the contemporary art world.
Life in Stone describes the genesis of this important movement and highlights the works of fifteen prominant Zimbabwean sculptors. However, having achieved international acclaim, these sculptors are now having to struggle against the cliche and imitation that now falls within the purview of 'Shona' sculpture- a term that is over used as it is abused. The sculptors from Zimbabwe have achieved their reputations on the unique value and individuality of their work.
